Semiconductor industry sets record, hits $299B in revenue for 2011
The semiconductor industry set a record for revenue in 2011, hitting sales of $299.5 billion for the year, a slight increase from last year.
The Washington-based Semiconductor Industry Association reported Monday the amount was a 0.4 percent increase over 2010.
The industry dealt with numerous challenges during the year, from a European economy that seemed perpetually on the brink of faltering to flooding in Thailand and a double earthquake and tsunami that dealt a blow to the Japanese sector.
?Despite these setbacks the industry showed resiliency and posted year on year growth with record-breaking revenues for 2011,? said Brian Toohey, president of SIA...
Waste Management Phoenix Open raises $50K for Keep Phoenix Beautiful
Keep Phoenix Beautiful will be getting a bounty of green to the tune of $50,0000 from the Waste Management Phoenix Open for all the people who wore the color to Saturday?s golf action.
The first Green Out at the open encouraged people to wear the color. For every person that wore it, the Thunderbirds would donate money to Keep Phoenix Beautiful, which works on a number of efforts around the Valley from tree planting to recycling efforts.
The groups estimate that one-third of the Saturday crowd of 173,210 people wore green, and that included caddies and tournament sponsors...

U.S. Rep. Ben Quayle, R-Ariz., said today he will run for reelection in a north Valley and Scottsdale congressional district, setting up a tough Republican primary battle with U.S. Rep. David Schweikert.
New congressional district lines will be in effect for the 2012 elections. That has changed the lines for both Schweikert and Quayle, the son of former U.S. vice president Dan Quayle.

Go Daddy gets 10 million hits off Super Bowl ads
Go Daddy set a company record for the number of visitors to its site after its two Super Bowl commercials, including one that featured a new way to access the company.
The Scottsdale-based Internet domain registrar saw 10 million customers during the game, more than it has ever had during its annual ads on the National Football League?s showcase event. That came despite the ads drawing some critical derision.
The company used a quick response, or QR, code on one of its ads that allowed smartphone users to scan it...

Savings Bond Gift Matures Into Mother/Daughter Battle
DEAR ABBY: I'm 30 years old and have a close relationship with my mother, but something is bothering me. When I was a little girl, my grandmother gave me a U.S. savings bond for my birthday. It has matured to its full value. My mother refuses to give it to me. She said that my grandmother intended it as a wedding gift. The last time I brought it up, she got teary and emotional. When my grandmother died 18 years ago, it was tremendously painful for my mother. I think the reason Mom won't give me the money is it makes her feel like her mom is still around. ...
Woman Is Put Out With Man Who Won't Fix What's Broken
DEAR ABBY: My live-in boyfriend is a total ditz when it comes to challenges. He claims it's because he's a city boy, but I think it's just plain laziness. When something needs to be repaired, he looks the other way and expects me to be "Miss Fix-It." It doesn't matter what's wrong -- the car, the washer, plumbing, even issues with bills. It becomes my job.I want him to challenge himself sometimes. I've never known a man who won't venture into something that's not familiar. ...
Mom Uses Illness To Compete With Girl For Son's Attention
DEAR ABBY: I'm 18 and my boyfriend, "Jordan," is 17. We have been together a year and a half and rarely fight. There is only one problem in our relationship -- his mother. "Martha" has lupus and uses it to manipulate Jordan. When we plan dates, she'll tell him she feels sick and make him stay home to take care of her. As soon as the date is canceled, she's miraculously better. She complains that he doesn't spend enough time with her and lays guilt on him because she "could die any day," but says these things only when I'm around. ...
Bride Wants To Keep Friend's Lecherous Husband Off Guest List
DEAR ABBY: Over the years I've stayed in touch with my childhood best friend, "Claire." We talk a few times a year and I attended her wedding 10 years ago.In the intervening years, her husband, "Kirk," has cheated on her multiple times and was once arrested by an undercover cop when he tried to meet a 14-year-old for a sexual liaison. Despite it all, Claire has chosen to stay with him. I have made peace with the fact that it is her decision and, because she lives in another state, it hasn't affected my life in any practical way -- until now. ...
Care Providers Show Respect By Using A Patient's Name
DEAR ABBY: "She Has a Name in Georgia" (Dec. 2) complained that the care staff at the assisted living community where her mother lives calls her "Granny," "Grandma" and "Mamma." She found it disrespectful, and I agree with her.I am an R.N. with two advanced nursing degrees. Calling a resident "Granny," "Dear" or "Honey" is not loving or caring. It is degrading, humiliating and hurtful! It does not matter what the ethnicity of the attendant is; there are standards of conduct and patient's rights. ...

Barack Obama will watch Super Bowl (The Canadian Press)
INDIANAPOLIS - The First Fan has only one complaint about Sunday's Super Bowl: his favourite team isn't in it.
Obama will watch Super Bowl, wishes Bears playing (AP)
The First Fan has only one complaint about Sunday's Super Bowl: his favorite team isn't in it. President Barack Obama says on Twitter he's "looking forward to catching some of the big game" between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots. But he wishes "the Bears weren't watching it from home, too." Obama is a big fan of his hometown Chicago Bears and...
